Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Paul S. Eriksson Inc. published the first edition of Christine Jorgensen: a Personal Autobiography in 1967. Paul S. Eriksson arranged the book and edited the introduction written by Harry Benjamin. Christine Jorgensen received sex reassignment surgeries in 1952 under Harry Benjamin's medical advisement and became well known throughout the United States for her sex reassignment and open transsexual identity.
- Scope and Content:
The collection contains correspondence concerning edits to Christine Jorgensen: a Personal Autobiography, copy-editing notes on the book, drafts of Harry Benjamin's preface to the book, and a complete manuscript copy with edits for typesetting. Included are some pages from earlier drafts which have been marked for deletion in the final printing of the book. Correspondence primarily concerns edits to the preface of the book, which was written by Harry Benjamin. The correspondence includes letters from editors to Eriksson, letters between Benjamin and Eriksson, and a hand-written letter to Eriksson from Christine Jorgensen regarding cover art. Most of the correspondence and manuscripts are from 1967 but there are a few notes are from 2005 when a manuscript was discovered and returned to Eriksson.
