Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Alexander Doty was born in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1954. He was raised in El Paso, Texas and received his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso in 1976. Doty received his A.M. and Ph.D. in English and Film Studies from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1984. His Ph.D. thesis was about Alfred Hitchcock, and his academic work and teaching continued to focus on Hitchcock. Doty went on to teach at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At Lehigh University Doty served as the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Chair of the English Department. Doty went on to focus on queer cinema and media studies. He authored two books, Making Things Perfectly Queer: Interpreting Mass Culture (1993), and Flaming Classics: Queering the Film Canon (2000). He also co-edited a book with friend and colleague Corey Creekmur, Out in Culture: Gay, Lesbian, and Queer Essays on Popular Culture (1995). In 2008 Doty became a professor of Gender Studies and Communication and Culture at Indiana University Bloomington. He served as the chair of the Department of Communication and Culture. He also served as a member of the Kinsey Institute's Board of Trustees. In August of 2012 Doty died after being struck by a motorcycle in Bermuda. He died on August 5, 2012.
