Background

Biographical / Historical:

Horace Porter Goff was born on September 18, 1889 in Madison County, Indiana, to James E. and Minnie Goff. He lived in Middletown, Indiana for most of his life. Goff attended Indiana University between 1912 and 1918, earning an AB in Chemistry in 1918. During his time at Indiana University Goff was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, the national chemistry fraternity. In December 1917, during the semester break of his senior year at Indiana University, Goff voluntarily enlisted in the United States Military at the age of twenty-eight.

Goff left for Columbus, Ohio, on 13 December 1917 for his military training. From Columbus, he was moved to Washington DC and Maryland before being sent overseas to France. Goff was assigned to the 30th Engineer Regiment (Gas and Flame) of the Regular Army, later re-designated as the 1st Gas Regiment, which was established as the result of an order of the War Department in 1917 requiring that the Army have a gas and flame service with part of that service functioning as an offensive Gas Regiment. He had hoped that he would be employed as a chemical engineer to produce and analyze gases, but instead served as part of the gas unit on the Western Front.

Goff served in France until 1919, being discharged in February 1919. After returning to Middletown from his military service, he worked at his family's meat market. Later records indicate Goff worked as a bank clerk and then as a farmer. Goff was married to Ruth Sargent with whom he had three sons: John, Joseph, and James. He died in 1936, possibly as a result of his prolonged exposure to mustard gas.

Scope and Content:

The Horace Porter Goff papers span 1917-1919 and are arranged chronologically. They document Goff's activities from his enlistment to his discharge from the United States Army.

The collection includes letters written by Horace Porter Goff to his family, namely his mother and father, James, and his siblings, George and Earl. The letters detail the everyday events in training camps and on the field in France. His letters originate from Columbus, Ohio, where Goff went through early training, from Ft. Meyers, Virginia, where he had more specialized military training and drills, and finally from France, where Goff served on the front. He describes military drills, kitchen detail, inoculations, life in the barracks, the French people and countryside, and scenes of war.

Also included is Goff's diary from his time as a soldier, dating from 1917 to 1918. The entries in the diary supplement the correspondence, and often describe detailed accounts of his experiences, such as his military training, his transports to various locations, and his time on the front. Interesting entries contain details of his Atlantic voyage and descriptions of his life in France and French culture. A typewritten prayer for soldiers, origins unknown, was found within the diary.

Goff's grandson, James M. Goff, transcribed the letters and the diary in 1983 and combined them to create a chronological record of all of Goff's writings as a soldier.

Additional items include Goff's honorable discharge papers, verification of his honorable discharge for the Victory Medal application, Goff's 1918 commencement program from Indiana University, and several photographs described in Separated Materials below and published online in the Archives Photographs Collection.
