Background

Biographical / Historical:

Marshal H. Wrubel was considered a child prodigy when he entered the Julliard School of Music to study piano at age 11. He graduated from Julliard and also received a B.A. in physics from the City College of New York in 1944, at the age of 20. During the next two years, while serving in the U.S. Army, he worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. During this time he made the difficult decision to give up a promising musical career in favor of astrophysics.

Wrubel entered the Ph.D. program at the University of Chicago and completed it in only three years, earning his degree in 1949. He spent the 1949-1950 academic year at Princeton University on a National Research Council Post-doctoral Fellowship. Wrubel accepted an Assistant Professorship at Indiana University in 1950, and by 1966 had risen to the rank of Professor of Astronomy. He was also chairman of the interdepartmental committee on astrophysics and, from 1955 to 1958, served as the first director of IU's Research Computing Center.

A dedicated researcher, he contributed numerous papers on stellar interiors, stellar atmospheres, and hydromagnetics to leading scientific publications. He was also active in professional organizations, serving as a Councilor of the American Astronomical Society, on committees of the International Astronomical Union, and the National Science Foundation's astronomy panel. He also served on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals.

In 1968, Wrubel's already illustrious career was cut short. Spending a sabbatical year at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics in Boulder, Colorado, he suffered a fatal heart attack while hiking in the mountains, dying at the age of 44.

Scope and Content:

The Marshal H. Wrubel papers have been divided into series according to type and function, i.e. correspondence, service, or research. This does not differ greatly from their original arrangement, although folders within each series have been reorganized chronologically and/or alphabetically, if they were not already in that order.

The Correspondence series, dated 1950 to 1969, is further organized into two sub-series, one of General correspondence and the other of Subject-based correspondence, which retains Wrubel's filing system. The General correspondence sub-series contains the set of files which he maintained for his general correspondence. Arranged chronologically, these files consist entirely of outgoing letters, and date from 1965-1968. The second sub-series of subject-based correspondence consists of files identified by subject or author/recipient. Though there are records which date from as early as 1950, the bulk of them fall between 1962 and 1968. These folders are arranged alphabetically. Professor Wrubel died in 1968; the letter dating from 1969 is from the National Science Foundation to the IU Astronomy Department regarding Dr. Wrubel and a grant on which he had been working.

The Service series, 1964-1968, contains records of Wrubel's involvement with the American Astronomical Society. Among the positions he held in the AAS were Councilor, Publications Committee member, and participant in the Visiting Professor Program. The files contain minutes and agenda of meetings, reports, and communications between committee members. Files are arranged alphabetically by committee name with chronological arrangement within each group of folders.

The Research series consists mostly of Wrubel's notes and calculations. Also present in this series are computer programs written by Wrubel for use in his research, and made available for use by others through the Research Computing Center (later renamed the Wrubel Computing Center in his honor). More information on the computing environment at Indiana University during this time can be found by examining the Wrubel Computing Center records, Collection 152. The series also contains problems relating to his research which he assigned to graduate assistants. Wrubel filed his research materials by subject and arranged them alphabetically. This arrangement is maintained. Unfortunately, Wrubel dated few of his research materials though presumably most, if not all, of them were created between 1950 and 1968--his years of active research. Dates have been added to folders where available.
