- Barbara Shalucha founded the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center in Bloomington, Ind. in 1948 and served as its director until 1986. Shalucha first came to Indiana University as an instructor in the Botany Department. She was hired for her special perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. The Barbara Shalucha papers comprise 7 cubic feet and span 1935-1992. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, publications, subject files, and teaching materials.

- Biographical / Historical:
Barbara Shalucha was born on 9 December 1915 in Springfield, Vermont, to Joseph and Sophie Shalucha. Shalucha graduated from the University of Vermont in 1937 with a bachelor of arts degree and with a masters degree in 1938. She received her doctorate degree from Ohio State University in 1947.
Following completion of her doctorate degree in 1947 Shalucha was hired as an instructor in the botany department at Indiana University. She was hired for her special perspective on applied botany which incorporated youth involvement. As a result Shalucha co-founded Hilltop Gardens in 1948 where she served as director until her retirement in 1986. Shalucha's work at Hilltop earned her presidential citations from the Garden Clubs of Indiana, from the National Council of State Garden Clubs, and in being appointed a member of the advisory board for the Young Garden Council in Washington D.C. in 1963.
Other honors bestowed upon Shalucha include being appointed to the Food and Agriculture Advisory Council of the White River Park Development in 1983 by then Indiana Governor Robert D. Orr. Also in 1985 Shalucha was selected as a delegate by the China-United States Scientific Exchange to lecture on botanical gardens in China.
Shalucha maintained active memberships in Sigma Xi, Sigma Delta Epsilon, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Pi Alpha Xi.
Barbara Shalucha died on 10 May 1992.

When transferred to the Archives, the Barbara Shalucha papers were mixed in with the records of Hilltop Garden and Nature Center. These two collections were separated, but researchers may also want to see the finding aid for the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center, Collection C46 (https://archives.iu.edu/catalog/InU-Ar-VAA2614 ), as Dr. Shalucha's work very much centered around Hilltop.
The Shalucha papers consist of six series: Personal Correspondence; Professional Development; Publications; Teaching; Subject Files; and Awards.
The first series, Personal Correspondence, is arranged alphabetically and contains correspondence between Barbara Shalucha and individuals from all over the world. Materials in this series include correspondence from the from the time period Shalucha spent teaching at Wye College in Kent, England in the mid 1950s, as well as correspondence with the Indiana Garden Club and the New York Botanical Gardens.
Professional Development , the second series, is arranged alphabetically and consists a wide variety of materials created during Shalucha's career in education. Items include Shalucha's resume and dissertation in addition to materials related to the New York Botanical Gardens and the National Civic Garden Centers.
The third series, Publications, is arranged alphabetically and contains articles written by Barbara Shalucha or articles autographed and sent to her by professional colleagues. Publications of interest include "Botany: A Research Report, Four New Courses" and various articles on the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center programs.
Teaching, the fourth series is arranged alphabetically. This series four consists of records pertaining to the courses in the botany department Shalucha taught and materials include student papers, tests and class notes. Items of interests include the student reports on the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center.
The fifth series, Subject Files, is arranged alphabetically by subject. Materials found in this series were collected by Barbara Shalucha during her professional career. There is a variety of material relating to garden design, flowers, and material collected from various countries during a year-long sabbatical spent teaching at Wye College in Kent, England in the mid 1950's. An item of particular interest is that of the diary Shalucha kept during that sabbatical, which includes an invitation to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
The sixth series, Awards, consists of two plaques received by Shalucha for her work with Hilltop Garden and Nature Center.
