Background

Biographical / Historical:

In 1948, Harold Lancour, then associate dean at the University of Illinois library school, first informally proposed the idea of a library science honor society. Thirteen distinguished faculty members in the field of library science selected the first students to receive invitations. With those students, the Beta Phi Mu Library Science Honor Society was officially founded in August 1948, with the purpose of recognizing superior academic achievement in library and information science and for sponsoring professional and scholarly activities. In 1969, Beta Phi Mu was formally admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies, and in 1997, Beta Phi Mu became affiliated with the American Library Association. The motto adopted by the society reflects the service orientated nature of library science careers: Aliis inserviendo consumor or "Consumed in the service of others." The insignia, a dolphin and an anchor, replicates the mark of the Venetian printer, Aldus Manutius, founder of Aldine Press.

The Chi Chapter of Beta Phi Mu at Indiana University was established in 1971. The chapter sponsors career development workshops for the Library and Information Science students at Indiana University-Bloomington, offers several student scholarships, and recognizes outstanding achievement in the field of library science. They also hold yearly initiation ceremonies to induct new members into the local and international chapters of Beta Phi Mu.

There are three ways to be invited to join the honor society: completion of all requirements leading to a master's degree with a scholastic average of no lower than 3.75 where A equals 4.0, or completion of planned programs of advanced study beyond the master's degree which require full time study for one or more academic years with a scholastic average of 3.75 where A equals 4.0, or recommendation for membership by the faculty of the school attesting to the student's professional promise.

Scope and Content:

The Beta Phi Mu Chi Chapter collection consists of one series, Administrative files and is an accumulation of records that were kept by various officers throughout the history of the organization. The original labeling and organization of the files was retained as much as possible. Many files within the series relate to the initiation ceremony held yearly from 1991-2009 at the Indiana Library Federation meeting. These initiation files include registration information, speeches, event plans, and lists of inductees. There is also one file of correspondence to and from past vice-president David Kaser. Kaser was a past president of the Association of College Research Libraries, a former Guggenheim fellow, and was recognized as a Distinguished Professor in Library and Information Science at Indiana University in 1986. The Awards folder contains correspondence and applications relating to the honors and awards the organization bestows, and an Award Submissions file includes applications for the Chi's yearly student scholarly works award competition. When possible, the name on the submissions has been redacted, though titles and Chi members' comments are still readable. Finally, the Administrative files also include treasurer's reports, minutes, chapter newsletters, some member lists, and annual career forum (1995-2009) event planning files.

Acquisition information:

Accession 2002/066.

Accession 2010/033.

Appraisal information:

The collection included several issues of the Indiana Federation Library Focus newsletter. They may have been relevant to the organization in that this publication was used to publish announcements and invitations about new members or invitees. Since these ads were found elsewhere in the collection, the ILF Focus issues were removed and given to the Herman B Wells Library.

There was some duplication in files due to various officers contributing copies of the same records. Those duplicate records were compiled and a minimum number of copies were kept, while the rest were discarded.
