Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Born on August 18, 1928, in Keokuk, Iowa, James G. Witte, Jr., earned his A.B. degree in economics from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, before attending Indiana University. He received his Master of Arts in economics from IU in September 1954 and his Ph.D. in 1956. Witte spent three years teaching at Ohio University and two years teaching at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1961, Witte returned to Indiana University as an associate professor of economics. He was promoted to full professor in 1967.
Dr. Witte was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities; the St. Paul's Catholic Center, and several professional economic associations, including the American Economic Association, Atlantic Economic Association, and the Midwest Economic Association. He died on July 17, 1977, in Bloomington, Indiana.
- Scope and Content:
Spanning the period from 1939 to 1977, materials in this collection are representative of James G. Witte's intellectual output as an economics professor and scholar. The collection is organized into three series: Teaching materials, Professional career, and Writings.
The Teaching materials (1957-1973) series is further organized into two sub-series. The first sub-series, Course lectures, materials and term papers (1957-1973), consists of records from the several courses Witte taught during his career at Indiana University. In almost each instance the course file includes lecture notes; in many other instances, additional material such as notes, hand-outs, and term papers may also be found. The folder of Prof. Henry Oliver's course materials for E525 seems to have been printed by Witte with the permission of Oliver for use in Witte's lectures. The second sub-series, Graduate studies (1969-1972), includes drafts of student theses and dissertations. In many cases Witte's comments are included. Witte's role in graduate studies administration is in part represented in student recommendations for dissertation committees and fellowships. These recommendations are closed to researchers at this time.
The second series, Professional career, spans 1958-1974, and contains items from Witte's research and professional career. This series is divided into two sub-series: Conferences and Agreements and notes. Materials forming the Conferences sub-series include annotated conference publications and hand-written notes. Included in the Agreements and notes sub-series is a certificate appointing Witte as the Knox College delegate to the presidential inauguration of Elvis J. Stahr, Jr. at Indiana University, a contract, and unidentified research notes.
The third series of Writings spans 1939-1977, and is arranged further into two sub-series. The first, Manuscripts, drafts, and notes, spans the period from 1962-1977 and includes 36 articles and six unidentified manuscripts by Witte. Some articles are accompanied by letters from publishers and their draft versions. The second sub-series of Writings by others consists of published articles or papers by various scholars kept and annotated by Witte for use in his research or teaching. These articles are arranged alphabetically by the author's surname and include works by IU professor Henry M. Oliver, several chapters of the Federal Government Fiscal Policy of 1961, and six articles pertaining to the United Steel Corporation dating from the late 1930's.
