Abstract:
The Indiana University Board of Trustees serve as the governing board of the University. Created in 1820, its powers include the capacity to possess all the real and personal property of the university, to allocate the income of the university, and to create or approve all rules necessary to carry these powers into effect. This collection contains agendas, correspondence and reports which support the discussion generated at the official Trustee meetings.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

Created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1820 at the same time as the Indiana Seminary (the predecessor to Indiana University, the Board of Trustees is the governing body and legal authority of Indiana University. Initially, six men were named as trustees, with an additional four added in 1821 and another three in January 1926. The number of Trustees has fluctuated greatly through the years, reaching a height of 21 members in 1838. However, since 1975, there have been 9 members, including one full-time student. Today, the Board of Trustees meets nine times per year on various campuses across the state.

Scope and Content:

This collection is composed of the working papers of the Indiana University Board of Trustees, 1892, 1906-2006. These papers include agendas, correspondence and reports and other documents which support the discussion found in the official Board of Trustees minutes. These minutes include the official acts, resolutions, policies, agreements, and other discussion relating to the governance of Indiana University.

All of the papers from 1947-2006 are arranged in chronological order with files for each of the Trustee business meetings. Additionally, there are occasionally Executive Committee meetings files and Administrative Action Reports, which were first included with the minutes in November 1987. There is a very limited amount of material, primarily correspondence, relating to actions taken during the Board of Trustees meetings from 1906-1946.
