Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Faculty Women's Club was organized on April 24, 1913 by a group of 45 faculty wives as a social organization for the wives of faculty members and for women in the faculty. The group began with 76 dues paying members, which would increase to over three hundred members by 1950. Over the years it became a requirement for members of the Faculty Women's Club to either be a member of the University Club or have a spouse as a member of the University Club. The name of the organization was changed in 1959 to the University Women's Club to avoid further confusion with the Women's Faculty Club.

The University Women's Clubs' primary activities revolved around planning and holding social gatherings for members. The club held eight monthly meetings per year, from October through May. Over the years they organized a series of events, including Christmas parties, February Dinners, teas, tours, speakers, and skits. Several prominent people spoke to the club, including the poet Robert Frost, Herman B Wells, and Henry Radford Hope. The club also donated time and money to philanthropic causes, especially during the First World War and the Second World War.

When organized in 1913, the club was headed by an executive committee of three. Later, the executive functions were directed by a president, secretary, and treasurer. By 1965, the club had become so large that the officers included a president, three vice-presidents, a recording secretary, a corresponding secretary, a treasurer, a parliamentarian, a publicity chairman, a program chairman, a social chairman, and advisors for the Newcomers Club and the Dames Club.

Scope and Content:

The University Women's Club (formerly the Faculty Women's Club) collection contains minutes, reports, clippings, scrapbooks, and non-print materials including slides, photographs, a tape, and a phonorecord. The collection includes materials from 1913 through 1976 and occupies 7 cubic feet. The bulk of the materials are dated 1950 through 1976.

The first series, Minutes and Reports, consists of 13 folders. The minutes date from 1913 through 1990 and are arranged in seven books. Early minutes include lists of members, as well as the constitution of the club. The reports include Treasurer's Reports from 1949-1969 and Tea and Hostess Committee Reports dated 1954-1965. The Treasurer's Reports include regularly-updated itemized lists of University Women's Club expenses. The Tea and Hostess Committee Reports consist of lists of costs and descriptions of events hosted by members, including society teas and lectures.

There are 59 folders in the second series, Subject files, dating from 1913 to 1988. The bulk of the materials are dated from 1942 through 1970. Folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title. A prominent sub-series is the program material. The Program sub- series includes records related to annual Christmas parties, February dinners, and skits. Included among the material related to the skit, "You've Come a Long Way, Lady" are two slide carousals and a magnetic tape. There is also a record of the music from the program, "All's Wells that Ends Well." The slides, tape, and record were removed from the collection and are housed separately.

The final series, Scrapbooks, cover the period from 1947-2004. Types of materials in this series include photographs, clippings, programs, and related materials. Photographs have been removed from the scrapbooks and placed in the Archives photograph collection under the heading "University Women's Club Scrapbook Photos." Photographs from 1969 remain in the scrapbooks because it was not possible to remove them safely.
