Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Women's Faculty Club was established at Indiana University in 1923, but was incorporated into the University Club in 1959 along with three other older Indiana University clubs, including (1) the University Women's Club (originally called the Faculty Women's Club when first established in 1913), (2) the Newcomer's Club (originally part of the University Women's Club), and (3) the Men's Faculty Club (established in 1912). From 1959 until 1988, the University Club acted as an umbrella organization for the four separate clubs it contained, with each individual club pursuing its own programs, as well as adding on University Club programs, which were open to all members of the University Club. Starting in 1989, however, all programs have been listed under the rubric of the University Club and have been open to all members of the University Club regardless of what individual club the member officially belongs to.

The Women's Faculty Club's constitution states: "The object of this club shall be to promote acquaintanceship and to foster a spirit of friendliness among the faculty women." As part of this mission the Women's Faculty Club organizes social and cultural events such as dinners, dances, picnics, theater and opera parties, lectures, and receptions for distinguished visitors to the campus. Membership in the Club is open to Indiana University professors, instructors, full-time lecturers, librarians, administrative officials, part-time faculty members that are not Indiana University degree candidates, visiting faculty, and spouses of members. There are many groups in the Women's Faculty Club. Among them are: Circulating Book Group, Book Review Group, Bridge Group, Stitch and Chat Group, Hiking Group, Music Study Group, and Garden Study Group.

Scope and Content:

The Women's Faculty Club records consist mainly of administrative material such as correspondence, minutes from the Board of Directors meetings, the club constitutions and other policy documents, budget and financial notes and reports, membership rosters, officer reports, newsletters, and surveys. The collection also includes fliers and other publicity material related to the organization of receptions, luncheons, presentations, workshops and other social and informational gatherings that constituted the club's annual programs.
