Background

Biographical / Historical:

Jane Fox was born on November 30, 1899 in Clay County, Kentucky. She attended school at the University of Missouri, transferred to the American College of Physical Education in Chicago, and finished her undergraduate degree at Columbia University in New York in 1927. In 1934 she earned her Master's degree in education from Indiana University. She was hired as an instructor in the IU Physical Education Department in 1927, and was promoted to an assistant professor in 1933 and as an associate professor in 1951. During her tenure at IU, Fox taught natural and modern dance as well as theory and technique courses for the teacher training program. Fox choreographed the productions of Parsifal and The Book of Ruth for IU's School of Music. She also established a modern dance workshop for the IU campus. Publications included "Let's Go Modern," "Problems in Dance Production," and "Together We Dance." Fox retired in 1965 and passed away on February 16, 1991.

Scope and Content:

The Jane Fox papers are arranged into one series of Subject files. Included in this small series is an article written by Fox ("Together We Dance") as well as several other papers written during the course of her career, some correspondence, two folders of research notes for her class on the history and theory of dance and other research activities, and a few assorted publications by other writers related to dance.
