Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Myles Brand was born on May 17, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his B.S. in 1964 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in 1967. In March of 2009, he was an awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Indiana University.
Brand began his academic career in 1967 as a professor of philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. He then served as a professor of philosophy and department chair at the University of Chicago (1972-1980), and head of the philosophy department (1981-1983), Director of the Cognitive Science Program (1982-1985), and coordinating dean for the College of Arts and Sciences (1985-1986) at the University of Arizona. From 1986-1989 he served as provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Ohio State University. Brand served as president of the University of Oregon from 1989-1994.
On August 1, 1994, Myles Brand became the sixteenth president of Indiana University. Under his leadership, IU saw record high enrollments, huge increases in fundraising and research grants, growth of the university endowment, and the creation of the first School of Informatics in the country. He also oversaw the gift from the Lilly endowment to fund the Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN), the consolidation of University and Methodist hospitals in Indianapolis, the development of the Central Indiana Life Sciences Initiative, and creation of the IU Advanced Research and Technology Institute (now the IU Research and Technology Corp).
During the course of his career, Brand served on a number of academic committees as a member and also as chair, including the American Council on Education (1994-1997), the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (1995-1998, and the Association of American Universities (1999-2000).
After his departure from IU, Brand spent six years serving as president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) where he worked to reform collegiate athletics and to hold athletes to stricter academic standards. Brand passed away in Indianapolis on September 16, 2009.
- Scope and Content:
The first series, Administrative files (1987-2003), consists of administrative materials related to the management and functioning of the University. Included are files related to various academic departments and schools, accreditation, athletics, the American Council on Education (ACE), the Midwest University Consortium for International Activities (MUCIA), international programs, student organizations, state relations, and the regional campuses.
The next series, Alpha files (1995-2002), contains copies of Brand's outgoing presidential correspondence organized into alphabetical files and therein by year. It is comprised largely of correspondence with IU staff, faculty, and fellow administrators.
