Background

Biographical / Historical:

Myra Montgomery (1905-1992), originally from Bryant, Indiana, attended Indiana University beginning in September 1923, graduating with a A.B. in English in 1927. During her time at IU she was a part of a number of student organizations including Alpha Chi Omega, Pleiades (of which she was president during 1926 and 1927), the Women's Athletic Association, and the Panhellenic Association. After graduation, she married Glen Duncan Arthur.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of one series of Indiana University dance cards spanning the years 1922-1929. The majority of the dance cards date from 1925 and 1926, when Myra Montgomery (Arthur) was in attendance at IU, although it is unknown if she attended all of these events herself.

The collection documents a number of different social events that students enjoyed during the 1920s at IU. In most cases, the dance cards include event names and dates, and they often include additional details such as the names of the musical groups that performed or the fraternity, sorority, or other student organization that sponsored the event. Among the musical groups that performed at these events were Hoagy Carmichael and Carmichael's Collegians, the Crimson Serenaders, the Tilson-Bayers-Dorsser Rainbow Garden Orchestra, Johnnie Bayersdorffer and his Orchestra, the Galbraiths Aces of Muncie, and others.
