Background

Biographical / Historical:

Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 1924 at the University of Illinois by Dean of Women Maria Leonard and Assistant Dean of Women Gladys Pennington to recognize the academic excellence of freshmen women. It was established in response to the creation of an honor society for men only, Phi Eta Sigma. Both of these groups were single-sex organizations until the passing of Title IX in the 1970s. The society became a national organization as more chapters were established, including the chapter at Indiana University, which was founded in 1931. Alpha Lambda Delta still exists today, celebrating academic excellence among freshmen and providing several thousand dollars of scholarships each year. There are over 275 chapters in the United States. At Indiana University, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma currently form a joint honor society that offers scholarships and leadership opportunities and coordinates social activities and service projects.
