Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Dances at Indiana University were a large part of student social life throughout the early to mid-twentieth century. Dance cards were used by female students to schedule dance partners throughout the evening. The cards also contain information about the dance, sponsors, chaperones, and performers. The decorative nature of the dance cards may have also made them mementos for the dance attendees.
- Scope and Content:
This collection was created from numerous loose dance cards acquired by and held at the IU Archives and consists of a single series of dance cards arranged chronologically (1909-1957). In a few instances, folders include multiple cards from the same dance. The dance cards are from a number of events sponsored by student organizations and other social activities that were held at IU between 1909 and 1954. Each provides space for the women to document their dance partners' names and often include information about the sponsoring student group, the dance chaperones, and the musicians performing for the event. Notably, Hoagy Carmichael performed at the April 14, 1928, Jonquil Jump and Louis Armstrong performed at the 1939 Junior Prom.
