Background

Biographical / Historical:

Linda Dégh (March 18, 1920 - August 19, 2014) was raised and educated in Hungary, where she graduated from Péter Pázmány University. Her teaching career began at Eötvös Loránd University's Folklore Department in Budapest. In 1965 she accepted a position at the Folklore Institute of Indiana University where she remained throughout her career, earning the title of Distinguished Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology in 1982. During her prolific career, Dégh published 18 books and over 200 essays. A key interest for her was legends, and she developed a new method for collecting, analyzing and interpreting what is now known as urban or contemporary legends. She mainly collected these stories from students, which she then published in the journal Indiana Folklore, founded by her in 1968. Her work also involved Hungarian and Hungarian immigrant folklore and ethnography; in 2001 she initiated a study on Hungarian Americans in the Calumet region of Illinois. Her professional activities included work with many scholarly folklore organizations, such as the American Folklore Society, where she served as president from 1981-1983. Linda Dégh received many awards and honors for her accomplishments, including multiple Fulbright Fellowships, the Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award from the American Folklore Society (2004), the Hoosier Folklore Society Achievement Award (1991), and the International Society for the Study of Contemporary Legend Outstanding Contribution Award (1993) to name just a few. Linda Dégh passed away in 2014.

This sub-series, besides collected research, includes notes from field work. The fourth sub-series, Folklore: General (1863-2012), documents her research into other aspects of folklore. The fifth sub-series, Field Recordings (1955-1998), is a collection of recordings of Dr. Dégh's field work, mostly interviews she conducted with informants.
