Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Plans for a "class annual" at Indiana University began as early as 1889, with a proposal by the senior class of 1890 for the publication of a yearbook. The inaugural publication of the Arbutus Yearbook, however, wouldn't be for another 4 years, debuting in the summer of 1894. Earlier iterations of a college annual were led by the Daily Student newspaper before the practice ebbed and was revitalized by the senior class in the fall of 1893 and arranged by a board of editors after, culminating in the publication of the first Arbutus yearbook. The venture of publishing a yearbook eventually became the responsibility of the junior class and was coordinated by a small group of students (the editorial board) led by an editor-in-chief and business manager under the broader organization of student-led publications, with an executive board intermittently established to facilitate the publications' longevity. Today, the responsibility of publishing the Arbutus does not belong to any class but is instead undertaken by interested students with the aim of gaining journalistic experience.
This student-led publication received its name from the trailing arbutus, a flowering evergreen species which students associated with the area. There was one hill, named Arbutus Hill, at which students of the past would congregate to relax and take in the sweet fragrance of the bloom. The location of this site is today protected, as this beloved plant is rare in this part of the country but grew in abundance on this hill due to its uniquely favorable conditions. While the style and format of Arbutus volumes change over time, the flower is a common and recurring motif.
- Scope and Content:
This collection contains six total copies of each year of publication for the Arbutus yearbook. It is organized into two series: Single Run, and Duplicates. The single run contains one copy of each volume, while the duplicate series contains 5 additional copies. Both series are arranged in chronological order according to volume number and year from the first year of publication in 1894 to 2016.
The first edition of the Arbutus in 1894 contains a brief history of the university, overviews of the different collegiate departments, as well as information regarding the various social and scholarly societies. Early editions also contain a great deal of humor, both in their satirical content and the depiction of different student groups. Many societies chose thematic and elaborate staging for their group photos. By the 1920s, the yearbooks gradually began to cover more facets of student life and events of the year, eventually taking a more journalistic tone in their goal of preserving a representation of what it was like to attend Indiana University at the time. In general, the publication contains sections devoted to different facets of university life: the administration, the student body, scholarly and social organizations, athletics, and campus events. These sections could be adapted to the concerns of the student body at the time, such as the inclusion of a section on the military during wartime.

- Appraisal information:
There have been multi-pronged efforts to maintain copies of this student-led publication at IU Archives over the years resulting in numerous duplicate copies. Each copy was evaluated based on its condition and uniqueness. The six best examples of each volume were retained, with particular consideration given to structural integrity. In cases where differences in binding were present for a given volume, retained copies were selected to be representative of these differences as well as evaluated for their condition. Redundant copies were deaccessioned.
- Custodial history:
This collection was developed through the integration of five separate accessions, themselves originating from accumulated donations, elsewhere in the libraries (7987), or transferred from IU Foundation (2018/156) and IU South Bend libraries (2014/075).
