Background

Biographical / Historical:

William M. Hutchins, translator, was born in 1944 in Berea, Kentucky. He obtained his BA from Yale University in 1964 in art history and went on to receive an MA in philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1967. He received his PhD in Near Eastern languages from the University of Chicago in 1971. Since 1978, Dr. Hutchins has been a Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. He is an award-winning translator of Arabic literature, most notably Naguib Mahfouz's Nobel Prize-winning Cairo Trilogy.

Scope and Content:

Consists of the manuscripts and proofs of translations from the Arabic made by William Maynard Hutchins, 1944- .

The major work represented here is his translation of all three volumes of Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo Trilogy. The editor for these volumes at Doubleday was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Editorial comments and queries in her hand are on each of the three manuscripts. Other Arabic, particularly Egyptian, authors translated by Hutchins include Tawfīq al-Hakïm, Abu Uthman Amr ibn al-Jahiz, and Nawal Sadawi..
