Background

Biographical / Historical:

Archipelago Books was founded in 2003 by Jill Schoolman. It is a not-for-profit press devoted to publishing excellent translations of classic and contemporary world literature. In the first year, the press - made up of only two employees - published four books. Over the first five years, the press published over forty-five books in nearly twenty languages. By 2018, the press' fifteenth year, three full-time staff members published at a rate of 15-16 books a year.

Scope and Content:

The Archipelago Books mss., 1981-2010, consists of the papers of the firm, including correspondence with authors, translators and advertisers; typescripts and manuscripts of books published; proof copies; and dust-jackets.

International authors represented in the collection include: Breyten Breytenbach; Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar; Francis Ponge; Julio Cortázar; Tadeusz Rozewicz; Marguerite Duras; Robert Musil; Henri Michaux; Elias Khoury; João Cabral de Melo Neto; Witold Gombrowicz; and Jean Giono. Translators represented include: Michael Henry Heim; Richard Sieburth; Richard Zenith; Lee Fahenstock; Bill Johnston; Peter Wortsman; Daniel Slager; Robert Bonono; and Peter Theroux.
