Background

Biographical / Historical:

Claude Ferguson, 1923-2006, was a forester, environmentalist, and Supervisor of the Hoosier National Forest from 1965-1971. After working for the U.S. Forest Service for over thirty years, Ferguson devoted himself to protecting the Hoosier National Forest from damage caused by off-road vehicles, as well as other conservationist causes. His efforts were instrumental in establishing the Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area in 1982.

The Charles C. Deam Wilderness Area consists of 12,953 acres of land and 36 miles of trails located near Bloomington, Indiana. It is part of the Hoosier National Forest in south-central Indiana. To be classified as a Wilderness under federal law, an area must sustain a minimal human imprint, provide opportunities for unconfined recreation, encompass at least five thousand acres, and offer educational, scientific, or historical value. The Deam Wilderness is a popular destination for hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding.
