Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Workshop met twice yearly, mainly in London but sometimes in Cambridge or Yarton, near Oxford, until the death of one of its primary organizers, Risa Domb (1937-2007). Founded on the initiative of Professor Raphael Loewe of Cambridge, the Hebrew Translation Workshop was run by Professor Nicholas de Lange and in later years by the aforementioned Risa Domb, University Lecturer in Modern Hebrew at Cambridge University and Life Fellow of Girton College. The Workshop provided a collegial atmosphere in which the participants could discuss their own translations of texts in both Hebrew and English, helping both to promote Israeli literature and raise the level of literary translation from Hebrew. Early participants included among others Bernard Lewis, David Daiches, Peter Jay, Peter Levi, Benjamin Tammuz, Leon Yudkin, and Anthony Rudolf. Many of the translations were subsequently published.
