Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Camp mss., 1873-1918 consists of field notes by historical researcher and interviewer Walter Mason Camp (1867-1925). Born in Camptown, Pennyslvania, Camp went on to study at Pennyslvania State College. He then became an civil engineering and railroad expert, hence his editorial position at The Railway and Engineering Review and his authorship of Notes on Track (1903). During the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, Camp also interviewed several hundred whites and Native Americans, the results of which are scattered in library collections throughout the country, including the Lilly Library.

This collection includes some of Camp's field notes. See also Camp mss. II, 1900-1925 for typescripts of Camp's other field notes by Professor Kenneth Hammer.

Scope and Content:

The collection contains thousands of his pencilled notes, mostly on small bits of paper. The notes arrived in over 80 envelopes and this arrangement has been preserved.

Some of the field notes were arranged by topics and include material on Frank Dwight Baldwin; James Montgomery Bell; Big Horse, Indian; Bozeman expedition, 1874; Cheyenne Indian wars; Ben Clark, George Crook, George Armstrong Custer; Delaware Indians; Daniel A. Knipe; Battle of Little Big Horn, 1876; Max Littman; Grant Marsh, John Martin, Nez Perc' Indian wars; Battle of Rosebud, 1874; Hugh Lenox Scott; Sundance Creek and Divide; Battle of Washita; Yellow Hair, Indian; Yellowstone Campaign, 1873. There are also sixty- four envelopes unclassified miscellaneous material.

Denver Public Library and Brigham Young University Library also received some of Camp's field notes. A transcript of Camp's field notes from all three institutions was made by Professor Kenneth Hammer for his book Custer in 76 (Brigham Young University Press, l976). A copy of the transcript is available for on site use, however no photocopies will be made without the permission of Professor Hammer.

Included are also four articles--Baldwin Indian Territory Expedition, 1874; General Baldwin's Scout in Panhandle of Texas, 1874; Indian of Yesterday and Today; How Big Horse Planned to Massacre Darlington, 1874--and the muster rolls of companies G, H, I, J, K, L, and M of the 7th regiment, U.S. Cavalry.

In the collection are military maps in an oversized folder, and a group of photographs.

The first folder in the box of articles contains a biographical sketch of Walter Mason Camp. For digitized content, see Digital Collections.
