Background

Biographical / Historical:

Orson Welles, 1915-1985, was an American actor, writer, producer, and director. He was born George Orson Welles (named for his parents' friend George Ade) on May 6, 1915, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. A child prodigy aided and encouraged by guardian Maurice Bernstein and teacher Roger Hill, Welles had considerable writing and acting experience before the age of twenty. Through the years this multi-talented artist acted and directed on the stage, in radio, film and television; made several recordings; authored plays, film scripts, and a newspaper column; and, as a political activist, contributed considerable energy to the 1944 presidential campaign in support of Franklin Roosevelt.

Scope and Content:

Manuscript materials include an unproduced screenplay of The Dreamers (1979), to have been directed by Orson Welles; a stage play by Richard France titled Obediently Yours, Orson Welles; a photocopy of The 'Bravades' for Rebecca: A Portfolio of Pictures Made for Rebecca Welles by her Father; two printed issues of Cahiers du Cinema, featuring articles on Welles (in French); a collection of tributes to Welles following his death; and a 1974 screenplay for Welles's film The Other Side of the Wind. Audio-Visual materials include audiocassette recordings of The Mercury Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Twelfth Night, and a VHS videotape of It's All True: Based on an Unfinished Film by Orson Welles (1992).
