Background

Biographical / Historical:

Ernest Taylor Pyle (1900-1945), also known as Ernie Pyle, was a Pulitzer Prize winning American journalist. After attending Indiana University Bloomington, Pyle served as a newspaper correspondent and columnist who covered the lives of ordinary people as well as soldiers in World War II. Pyle was killed in battle at Ie Shima in the Pacific.

Scope and Content:

The Pyle mss. VI, ca. 1923–1954, consist of papers concerning journalist Ernest Taylor Pyle, 1900–1945, Clarence E. Edmondson and Edna Hatfield Edmondson. Clarence E. Edmondson, Dean of Men at Indiana University, and his wife Edna were described by those who knew them as a second set of parents to Pyle. In a tribute to Dean Edmonson in the Indiana Alumni Magazine, Pyle notes "...outside of my own parents...Dean Edmonson did more to develop whatever alleged character I have than anybody else."

The collection contains a series of letters written by Pyle to the Edmondsons; an account of Clarence Edmondson's relationship with Pyle enclosed in a letter to Edmondson from E. Ross Bartley, May 12, 1944; documents, telegrams and letters related to the honorary degree conferred on Ernie Pyle in 1944; a copy of the Indiana Alumni magazine, January 1945 related to the death of C.E. Edmondson and miscellaneous documents concerning Dr. Edna Hatfield Edmondson; newspaper clippings about Pyle during the war years and beyond. Also present is a 1925 photograph of William Lowe Bryan, 10th President of Indiana University.
