Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Association of Literary Magazines of America (ALMA) was formed at a meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 10 and 11, 1961, sponsored by The Carleton Miscellany. Editors of nineteen literary magazines were present. Its primary purpose was to find means of increasing the usefulness and the prestige of small literary magazines in the United States and Canada.

The membership later increased to thirty-six magazines. The first permanent Executive Board was composed of Reed Whittemore, Henry Rago, and Robert Bly. Current and long-range plans included the awarding of an annual prize for the best college literary magazines and extensive distribution-promotion activities for member magazines.

Scope and Content:

The ALMA mss., 1961-1964, consists of the correspondence and papers of the Association of Literary Magazines of America.

The correspondents are Robert Bly, Whit Burnett, Peter James Caws, Sherman B. Chickering, Boyd Compton, Morton D. Elevitch, Robie Mayhew Macauley, David McDowell, Roy Miller, Frederick Morgan, Robert O'Brien, Henry Rago, David Ray, Paul H. Rohmann, and Reed Whittemore.
