Background
- Biographical / Historical:
The Russian writer Aleksandr V. Amfiteatrov, 1862-1938, whose works include novels, short stories, and plays, was exiled to Siberia in 1902 for publishing "Gospoda Obmanovy" ("The Obmanovs"), a satirical sketch depicting the Russian Imperial Family.
In the revolutionary year 1905, he emigrated to Western Europe and returned to Russia at the time of the First World War, only to leave once again in the wake of the October Revolution. Thereafter his home in the Italian seacoast town of Levanto offered temporary asylum and hospitality to a number of eminent Russian writers, poets, musicians, and intellectuals.
- Scope and Content:
Correspondence includes letters from writers such as Ivan Bunin, Valerii Briusov, Sholom Alchiem, and Aleksandr Kuprin; poets Konstantim Bal'mont, Dimtrii Merezhkovskii, and Viachslav Ivanov; and theatrical celebrities, such as Moscow Art Theatre director Konstantin Stanislavskii and the celebrated basso Fedor Chaliapin. Prominent political and social activists are also represented, including liberal political thinker Petr Struve, long-time revolutionary publicist Vladmir Burtsev, Cossak Hetman Petr Krasnov, and several members of the influential Suvorin publishing family.
Writings includes manuscripts of writings by Amfiteatrov and articles, clippings and writings by other authors. Family files includes correspondence and other mterials related to Illaria Vladinirova Amfiteatrova, Daniil Aleksandrovich Amfiteatrov, Vladmir Aleksandrovich Amfiteatrov-Kadashev, Maksim (Massimo) Aleksandrovich Amfiteatrov, Roman Aleksandrovich Amfiteatrov, Sabina Aleksandrovna Amfiteatrova, and Aleksandra ("Sara") Nikolaevna Amfiteatrova.
