Background

Biographical / Historical:

George Antheil, 1900-1959, was an American composer and pianist. While living in Europe in the 1920s, Antheil married Boski Markus and lived with her in Paris above the now-popular tourist destination, Shakespeare and Company. The owner of the bookstore, Sylvia Beach, introduced Antheil to Ezra Pound, a poet who became an advocate for Antheil's music. Pound published his book, Antheil and the Treatise on Harmony, in 1924. Back in the United States, Antheil composed music for films. He also authored articles, an autobiography, and even a mystery novel whose main character may have been based on Ezra Pound. During World War II, Antheil worked with actress Hedy Lamarr developed a radio frequency hopping technique for Allied torpedoes to communicate. They were both inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014 as a result of this project. Antheil died of a heart attack in 1959.
