Background

Biographical / Historical:

John Applegate of Greencastle, Indiana, mustered into the 71st Indiana Infantry regiment, Company C, as a corporal, August 18, 1862. The regiment was re-organized in February 1863 to the 6th Cavalry Battalion, and Applegate then served in Company F. He was imprisoned at Andersonville sometime in 1864 until April 1865. Applegate mustered out as a First Lieutenant on September 15, 1865 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. At the time of his death in November 1867, he was sheriff for Putnam County, Indiana. John and Elizabeth Lynch were married in July 1846 and had four children, but the only child to survive John was the youngest, Alma Etta Applegate.

Scope and Content:

The Applegate mss., 1863-1929, consists mainly of correspondence between John S. Applegate, 1823-1867, and his wife Elizabeth S. (Lynch) Applegate, 1823-1890, during the Civil War, and letters from Elizabeth S. Applegate to their daughter Alma Etta (Applegate) White, 1855-1930. Each of John Applegate's letters is accompanied by a typed transcription, and an index listing date and place of writing precedes the file itself.

Other correspondents in the collection include historian Jesse William Weik, 1857-1930, of Greencastle, Indiana, who was acting in a legal capacity for Elizabeth Applegate and various family members, particularly those of Alma's husband, the Rev. Joseph Sigel White, 1854-1936. Other documents include: a chronology of John and Elizabeth Applegate and their children; some receipts and real estate documents; a photograph of Alma Applegate and her husband the Rev. J. S. White; and a newspaper copy of Alma White's obituary, unfortunately undated.
