Background

Biographical / Historical:

John Arden, 1930-2012, was an English playwright. He was born in Barnsley, England and studied architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art. He wrote plays while he was in school and continued after graduation when he was not working as an architectural assistant. He published two plays before Live Like Pigs (1958) was released. The following year, he published his play, Serjeant Musgrave's Dance, in 1959. He went on to release several more dramas that offered social commentary on British culture before his death in 2012.

Scope and Content:

The collection consists of notebooks containing manuscript drafts of Arden's plays, as well as scripts and ephemera relating to Serjeant Musgrave's Dance and Live Like Pigs.
