Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Lily Clive Nutt, 1888-1973, known by the pen name Clive Arden, was an English romance novelist in the early 20th century. Arden published several novels over the course of her career. Two, Sinners in Heaven (1923) and Enticement (1924), were adapted as silent films by Paramount. Nutt died in 1973.
Edward Frederic Benson, 1867-1940, was an English novelist who corresponded with Arden. He published several novels including Dodo (1893) and a series, Mapp and Lucia (1920-1939). Benson died in 1940.

The Arden, C. mss., 1938-1940, consists of twenty-eight letters from Edward Frederic Benson, 1867-1940, author, to writer Lily Clive Nutt, known by pen name Clive Arden, 1888-1973. The letters are concerned with literary topics, social engagements, and the growing deterioration of Benson's health. The last letter was written just two weeks before his death.
