Background

Biographical / Historical:

Sir Edwin Arnold, 1832-1904, was a British author and journalist. Early in his career he held a teaching position in Poona, India, then returned to England in the 1860s to work for the Daily Telegraph, where he would continue to be involved for over four decades. Arnold was predominantly known as a poet, however. Interested in Eastern philosophy and literature, Arnold published a collection of poems entitled The Light of Asia (also known as The Great Renunciation) (1879). His other poetry collections include Indian Song of Songs (1875), Pearls of Faith (1883), The Song Celestial (1885), With Sadi in the Garden (1888), Potiphar's Wife (1892), and The Japanese Wife (also known as Adzuma) (1893). His poems often concerned the teaching of Buddhism and Hindu scriptures. Arnold died in 1904.

Francis Henry Skrine, 1847-1933, was a former English army officer who entered the India Civil Service in 1868. The British colonial administration in India appointed him to various positions such as an assistant magistrate and a collector of customs. He retired in 1897. Skrine died in 1933.
