Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Born Alejandro José de Atocha, Alexandra J. Atocha, 1804-1870, moved from Spain to New Orleans and worked as a businessman in the United States. He eventually became an American citizen. Atocha was interested in Mexican politics and relations between Mexico and the United States; he was a friend of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and had at least two interviews with President James Polk on Santa Anna's behalf (although it is unclear whether Santa Anna requested this).
- Scope and Content:
The correspondence in the collection deals largely with Atocha's personal and business affairs. The period covered includes the war between Mexico and the United States, 1845-1848, and while the emphasis of the correspondence is not on the war there is political news and comment on relations of the United States and Mexico.
