Background

Biographical / Historical:

Brocard Sewell (née Michael Seymour Gerveys Sewell), 1912-2000, was born in Bangok, Thailand before being sent to Cornwall, England after his mother died. He became a Carmelite friar in 1952, a priest in 1954, and established The Ayelsford Review as the magazine for his monastery in 1955. He worked as both an editor and an author of literary material. Brocard edited the magazine from 1955 to 1968. The review was published by St. Albert's Press, also established in 1955. He featured several young and counterculture poets in the magazine, including Michael and Frances Horovitz. He also published political articles often related to police corruption and national security. The review ceased publication after 1968, when Father Brocard was expelled from Aylesford due to a piece he wrote for the Times that criticized Pope Paul VI's "Humane Vitae," which condemned artificial birth control. Brocard moved to Canada to teach at various institutions until he was allowed back at Aylesford. He died in 2000.
