Background

Biographical / Historical:

In 1539, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Francis I of France signed the Treaty of Toledo, agreeing to make no further alliances with England. In the same year, Charles V stifled a rebellion in Ghent and signed the Treaty of Franfurt with the Lutheran Schmalkaldic League.

In 1710, Pylyp Orlyk, a Cossack of Ukraine, was elected as the Hetman of the Zaporizhian Host and published Pacts and Constitutions of Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporizhian Host. In the same year, during the Great Northern War, Sweden lost control of Estonia and Livonia to the Russian Empire.

The Baltic mss., 1539-1710, consists of four volumes of Russian and Slavic legal documents authored by various persons.
