James P. Banta, 1814-1873, was born in Washington County, Indiana, in 1814. He married Jane P. Lewelling, 1812-, on 18 October 1836. During the Civil War, Banta served as a Captain in the Indiana 5th Cavalry, 90th Regiment, Company E. He died in Washington County, Indiana, in 1873.

The Banta mss., 1836-1888, consists of the papers of James P. Banta, 1814-1873, Civil War soldier of Salem, Indiana, and his wife, Jane P. Lewelling, 1812-.
Included are Banta's commission as captain in the 5th cavalry (90th regiment, Indiana volunteers); his war diary, August 16, 1862 - August 18, 1863; family correspondence, including some letters from relatives in Kansas, 1885-1886; and correspondence and papers of Mrs. Banta in regard to obtaining a pension, 1884-1888.
