Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Major Flavel C. Barber, C.S.A., of Rose Hill, Tennessee, fought for the Confederacy as part of the 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers during the American Civil War. He was born in 1830 and died in battle May 15, 1864.
- Scope and Content:
The Barber mss., 1862-1864, consists of the Civil War diary of Major Flavel C. Barber, C.S.A. Major Barber of Rose Hill, Tennessee, began his narrative "to while away the tedious hours of imprisonment" on Johnson's Island in Sandusky Bay, Ohio. His account begins with the movement of his 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers to Fort Donelson in February 1862, details the three days of battle, the surrender of the Confederate troops, and his own transfer to the prison on Johnson's Island. In late August a prisoner exchange was agreed upon and Barber, along with several hundred other officers and men, left Johnson's Island September 1, 1862.
Three smaller volumes continue his account and reports of the war until his death in battle, May 15, 1864. A small Bible, removed from his pocket after his death, along with a typed transcript of the diary through February 27, 1864, complete the collection.
