Background

Biographical / Historical:

Ellsworth Barnard, 1907-2003, was born in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, on April 11, 1907. After completing his BS at Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1928, he completed an MA (1929) and PhD (1935) in English at the University of Minnesota. Barnard taught English at Massachusetts State College, the University of Tampa, Williams College, Alfred University, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, the University of Rochester, the University of Chicago, Bowdoin College, Northern Michigan University, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Throughout his career, Barnard was very active politically. He retired in 1973. Barnard published several books, including Edwin Arlington Robinson: A Critical Study (1952), Wendell Willkie: Fighter for Freedom (1966), In a Wild Place: A Natural History of High Ledges (1998), Verses in a Vanished Mode (2002), and Don't Give Up the Fight, Ever: Lectures & Essays: 1930-2003 (2004). Barnard died on December 29, 2003.

Wendell Wilkie, 1892-1944, was born in Elwood, Indiana, on February 18, 1892, to Henrietta Trisch and Herman Francis Willkie. He received his BA (1913) and his LLB (1916) from Indiana University. He joined his parents' law firm in 1916 and volunteered for the United States Army in 1917. After being discharged in 1919, Willkie worked as a lawyer and eventually entered politics. He lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential election and went on to advise the president. He passed away in New York City on October 8, 1944.

Scope and Content:

The Barnard mss., 1940-1966, consists of the research materials gathered by professor Ellsworth Barnard, 1907-2003, for his biography Wendell Willkie: Fighter for Freedom (Marquette, Northern Michigan University Press, 1966).

The collection includes correspondence and transcripts of interviews with many of Willkie's friends, associates and family; preliminary drafts of the biography; correspondence, memoranda, and publicity relating to the publication of the book; copies of reviews; and a few pieces written by Barnard about Willkie, including the original complete typescript of the biography.
