Background

Biographical / Historical:

Ross Franklin Lockridge, Jr., was born on April 25, 1914 in Bloomington, Indiana, to Ross Franklin Lockridge, Sr., and Elsie Lillian Shockley. The family moved to Fort Wayne for several years, but later returned to Bloomington. Lockridge attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was known for his impressive academic record. In 1937, he married Vernice Baker and together the couple had four children, Ernest, Jeanne, Ross, and Lawrence. In 1941, Lockridge began work on the novel that would become Raintree County, and to support his family while writing the massive novel, he taught as a visiting professor at Simmons College in Boston from 1941 to 1945. Lockridge died on March 6, 1948, in Bloomington, Indiana, several weeks after the publication of Raintree County. The novel was his only book.

Scope and Content:

The Blankertz mss., 1941-1942, consist of letters from author Ross Franklin Lockridge, 1914-1948, to educator Donald Frederic Blankertz, 1912-1990. Lockridge writes from Massachusetts as he was a visiting professor at Simmons University during this period. The discussions are of matters literary, the war, and several mentions of progress on "the novel."
