Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Bloomington Garden Club's mission is to promote the knowledge and love of gardening; to aid in the protection of native trees, plants, and birds; and to encourage civic planting and beautification in Bloomington, IN. The Club began in February of 1937, when a group of local women met at the home of Mrs. M.E. Hufford to begin a Landscape Study Group, a Purdue University program. Once the women completed the program, they decided to start a garden club and join the State Federation of Garden Clubs.
From this garden club, two other programs began, The Junior Garden Club and the Hilltop Garden Program (which was situated in the current Hilltop Gardens location) with the assistance of the IU Department of Botany.
The club hosts an annual event called the Bloomington Garden Walk to raise money for local Bloomington organizations, and works with community organizations such as Mother Hubbard's Cupboard and Community Kitchen.
