Background

Biographical / Historical:

Ebbe Borregaard (b. 1933) is a California-based author, poet, and publisher. The White Rabbit Press in San Francisco brought out his first published work, The Wapitis (1958). As part of the Mimeo Revolution of the 1960s, Borregaard founded the Oannes Press, which was named after the Babylonian sea god. The small San Francisco press initially planned to publish six titles under the "Oannes Series," but only two works were ever printed: Helen and Pat Adams' ballad opera SAN FRANCISCO'S BURNING and James Alexander's ETURNATURE. In the early 1960s, Borregaard also owned and operated Borregaard's Museum and Art Gallery with his wife, Joy, and George Stanley. Throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s, he wrote works of poetry, many of which he self-published, and contributed to periodicals and anthologies. In Donald Allen's seminal The New American Poetry 1945-1960, Borregaard appeared under poets of the San Francisco Renaissance.
