The Brown mss., 1933-1955 contains the correspondence and papers of Paul Van Dyke Brown (1899-1979), a former park executive of Indianapolis. A World War I army veteran, Brown graduated from Butler University in 1924 and went on to work as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times and the Indianapolis News. From 1928 to 1933, Brown was superintendent of Indiana State Parks. Between 1933 and 1943, he then became Regional Director of the National Park Service. And between 1943 and 1948, he was superintendent of the Indianapolis Parks Department, playing an instrumental role in the founding of its Starlite Musicals summer series. For the rest of his career, Brown moved to Seattle and became head of its park system until he retired in 1961.
