Background

Biographical / Historical:

Johnson Township was one of the first areas of Brown County, Indiana, to be settled, after the completion of a government land survey in 1820. By 1836, Johnson was one of five townships into which Brown County was divided. Over time, Johnson Township was absorbed into the surviving four townships of Jackson, Hamblen, Washington, and Van Buren.

The Brown county, Ind., History mss., 1858-1889, consist of election records, school records, bids for paupers, service on roads receipts, and other items, for Johnson township, Brown County, Indiana.

Throughout the collection are teacher agreements arranged by the citizens of Johnson township and petitions for roads.

Note on Indexing Term - "Education": Materials consist of school attendance reports; plot of school district; school receipts; teachers' reports to trustees; specifications for building a school at Little Blue Creek; school census records for 1888 and 1889; and a register of tardiness at school, all for Johnson township, Brown County.
