Biographical / Historical:

The Brunner mss., ca. 1974 consist of manuscripts of science fiction writer John Brunner (1934-1995). Born in Preston Crowmarsh, Brunner studied at Cheltenham College. He wrote his first novel, Galactic Storm, in 1951, though it was published under a penname. Between 1953 and 1955, Brunner served in the Royal Air Force. He then went on to write several science fiction novels including The Jagged Orbit (1969), The Sheep Look Up (1972), and The Shockwave Rider (1975). Brunner also wrote a screenplay, several short stories and poems, and scholarly articles of various kinds throughout his lifetime. And he maintained interests in weapons violence, environmental devastation, and advocating for preventative measures against nuclear catastrophe
