Background

Biographical / Historical:

James H. Richardson of Henryville, Indiana, was mustered into Company D, 49th regiment, Indiana infantry, on November 21, 1861. He died at Black River, Mississippi, on July 6, 1863.

Robert J. Biggs, also from Henryville, Indiana, served in Company D, 49th regiment, Indiana infantry from August 26, 1862, to July 15, 1865.

The Caldwell mss., 1862-1863, are Civil war letters to William Caldwell, and his wife, Sarah, of Hubbard, Indiana, from James H. Richardson, brother of Mrs. Caldwell, A. H. Caldwell, brother of William Caldwell, and Robert J. Biggs.

James H. Richardson of Henryville, Indiana, was mustered into Company D, 49th regiment, Indiana infantry, on November 21, 1861. He died at Black River, Mississippi, on July 6, 1863. His letters are dated March 26 and July 11, 1862, and June 2 and 26, 1863.

Robert J. Biggs, also from Henryville, Indiana, served in Company D, 49th regiment, Indiana infantry from August 26, 1862, to July 15, 1865. His letter, July 31, 1863, and that of A. H. Caldwell, July 13, 1863, inform William and Sarah Caldwell of the death of James H. Richardson.
