Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Hector-Neri Castañeda, 1924-1991, was a noted Indiana University Professor of Philosphy. Born in Guatemala, he immigrated to the United States to study at University of Minnesota, where he recieved his B.A, M.A, and PhD in Philosophy. Before his professorial position at Indiana, he founded the philosophy journal Noûs while full-time faculty at Wayne State University. Castañeda recieved fellowships and grants for his work from the Guggenheim Foundation, the T. Andrew Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation. He was elected President of the American Philosophical Association Central Division in 1979, was named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1990, and received the Presidential Medal of Honor from the Government of Guatemala in 1991.
