Background

Biographical / Historical:

Dr. George W. Champ was born February 6, 1830, in Botetourt County, Virginia and married Elizabeth Ann Nation on January 4, 1983. He was an Indiana physician, businessman, and postmaster.

He was appointed postmaster in New Lisbon, Indiana on September 20, 1861 and enrolled in the 106th regiment of the Indiana Minute Men in 1863. In 1864, after being mustered out on July 15, 1863, Dr. Champ was commissioned as first assistant surgeon in the 139th regiment of the Indiana volunteers. He mustered out after 100 days, on Sept. 29. Shortly thereafter, on October 11, he was licensed as a physician at New Lisbon, Indiana.

The details of Dr. Champ's medical education and practice are not known. His papers provide only an undated memorandum book of medical notes as evidence of his medical career. However, he was licensed as a physician in New Lisbon, Indiana on October 11, 1964 and in Dublin, Indiana on September 18, 1865. Dr. Champ was also an accomplished businessman, a postmaster of New Lisbon, Indiana, and an activist for prohibition. He died May 19, 1905.
