Background

Biographical / Historical:

William Allen Clark, 1844- , Hoosier soldier, was mustered in August 16, 1862 in Indianapolis as a private. He began writing to his parents the next day and continued, with few exceptions, to do so weekly through early 1865. His discharge papers, dated July 6, 1865, are present in the collection, as is an August 10, 1894, "Certificate given as official evidence of enlistment, service and Honorable Discharge," and his Pension Certificate for quarterly payments, 1914-1919.

Scope and Content:

Clark began writing to his parents in August 1862 and continued, with few exceptions, to do so weekly through early 1865. However, there are no letters between late August and mid-December 1864, part of which time Clark was home on leave. The collection includes his furlough document for thirty days, through October 18th, as well as an extension to November 10th, 1864. The last letter to his parents is dated February 19, 1865.

Clark was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, June 26, 1865. His discharge papers dated, July 6, 1865, are present in the collection, as is an August 10, 1894, "Certificate given as official evidence of enlistment, service and Honorable Discharge," and his Pension Certificate for quarterly payments, 1914-1919.

There are a few other letters, mostly by or to other family members, written both during and following the war. The correspondents in this group are I.N. Clark , William's older brother, to his parents in 1863 and 1864; James Smith to David C. Clark , William's father, in 1864; David C. Clark to son William in 1873; J.M. Patridge to William A. Clark in 1880; and Sam Cade, William's brother-in-law, to D.C. Clark , August 9th, no year.

Clark's Civil War letters were published in the Indiana Magazine of History, Vol. XCI, nos. 1-4 (1995). Collection size: 87 items
