Background

Biographical / Historical:

Barbara Ellen Crist was born in Ohio in 1844 to Samuel Simon Crist and Margaret Ann Crist. She would eventually become the wife of John Erastus Lane, 1837-1893, a soldier with the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, in 1865. Together they had six children. Crist was killed in 1929 when she was struck by a freight train on her way home from the grocery store. While it was ruled an accidental death, evidence suggests she got back on the tracks in front of the train after being warned to get off of them. She is buried in Illinois.

Milton C. Crist, 1838-1864, was a brother of Barbara Ellen Crist and a soldier with the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War along with his brother-in-law, John Erastus Lane. Both men are the main correspondents of Barbara Ellen Crist during the span of this manuscript.

Scope and Content:

The Crist mss., 1861-1865, consists of letters to Barbara Ellen Crist, chiefly from her brother, Milton C. Crist, 1838-1864, and her future husband, John Erastus Lane, 1837-1893, both of whom were soldiers with the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Some of the letters refer to the battles of Murfreesboro, 1862-1863; Chattanooga, 1863; and Missionary Ridge, 1863.

A letter written to Barbara Lane in 1893 from her brother-in-law, Jesse B. Lane, and in 1897 from her niece, Vicera Alspach, complete the collection.
