Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Crull family lived in Hamilton County, Indiana. Hamilton County became part of the United States when the Miami tribe and United States representatives signed the Treaty of St. Mary's on October 6, 1818. In 1822, the settler population applied to be an independent county in Indiana which was granted on January 8, 1823. The name "Hamilton" is in honor of Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first secretary of the treasury.

Scope and Content:

The Crull mss., 1835-1904, consists of letters and documents relating to the Crull family of Hamilton County, Indiana. Included are business receipts, land deeds for properties in Boone and Hamilton counties, and documents relating to Rufus Crull's Civil War service as lieutenant in Company "L" of the 8th Cavalry (39th) Regiment Indiana Volunteers.

Correspondents in the collection include Abner Crull, Alfred J. Crull, Joseph Camp Griffith Kennedy, and Thomas Ward; recipients are Daniel Crull and Rufus Crull.
