Background

Biographical / Historical:

Samuel Day, 1831-1895, Civil War soldier, was born in Walsoken, Norfolk City, England in 1831 and married Mary Spencer in 1850. They came to the United States about 1855 and Samuel became a naturalized citizen in 1857. Moving sometime thereafter from Ohio to Indiana, Day enrolled in the 8th Indiana Battery, Light Artillery, November 16, 1861 "to serve Three years or during the war..." He was discharged from service January 25, 1865 "at Chattanooga, Tennessee by reason of Expiration of term of service." He was commissioned as U.S. Marshall in Indianapolis on October 4, 1867 and elected Justice of the Peace for Vanderburgh County, Indiana in 1876 with reappointments in 1880 and 1885. Samuel Day died November 2, 1895 in Evansville, Indiana.

Scope and Content:

The Day, S. mss., 1857-1895, consists primarily of a diary and related papers of Civil War soldier Samuel Day.

The diary appears to be a fair copy made from notes for the period July through December 1863. It is accompanied by a transcription made by Day's great-granddaughter, Mary Anne (Winborne) Goode. Also present in the collection are Day's naturalization papers; his appointment papers as "First Sergt. in the 8th Indiana Battery," November 21, 1863; "Volunteer Descriptive List and Account of pay and clothing for 1st Srgt. Samuel Day," dated Oct. 4, 1864; discharge papers, January 25, 1865, with stamped indication of additional bounty paid July 6, 1868; appointment as U.S. Marshall, 1867; three certificates relating to his election and appointment as Justice of the Peace; and his widow's pension papers, dated December 5, 1895.
